Clarinet & Composition

Middle-aged white male playing saxophone: clarinet and composition teacher David D. McIntire.
  • David D. McIntire was born in rural upstate New York, where weekly exposure to Protestant hymnody and playing in a small town band were the experiences that provided his entry into music. He has maintained his livelihood through playing, teaching, composing, and writing about music for more than forty years. He showed an inexplicable interest in electronic and modern music from his early teen years, and played clarinet and saxophone with several groups, most notably the Colorblind James Experience, the Whitman/McIntire Duo, and the Hotheads. From 2012-2022 he led the Ensemble of Irreproducible Outcomes (EIO), a trio of composer/musicians who performed widely throughout the Midwest and northeastern US, releasing several recordings. He holds music degrees from Nazareth College of Rochester, Ithaca College and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

David recently retired from Missouri Western State University, where he served as the Director of Music Technology Studies. Prior to this, he served as an adjunct professor at University of Missouri - Kansas City, Avila University, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City Community College, and Missouri Central University.

In addition to his composition and college teaching, David also runs Irritable Hedgehog, a small music label which offers select recordings of minimalist and post-minimalist repertoire, as well as those of EIO. Their recordings have been widely praised for their superb artistry and sound quality.

David has limited availability to accept private students in clarinet, composition, song writing, and music business.
